Where should PhD articles be published?
The main scientific results of the dissertation must be published before the defense. These may include:
journals from the List of Recommended Scientific Publications of KOKSON,
international peer-reviewed journals, such as those included in Scopus or Web of Science.
What is an international peer-reviewed scientific journal in the context of PhD studies in Kazakhstan?
In order for an article to be considered as a scientific result for a PhD, An international journal should:
have an impact factor according to Journal Citation Reports (JCR),
or enter the Web of Science Core Collection (Arts & Humanities, Science, Social Sciences sections),
or have a corresponding percentile according to CiteScore in the Scopus database in the field that corresponds to the topic of the dissertation.
This confirms the quality of the journal and allows the publication to be officially accepted for the dissertation defense.
It is important to note that if a journal was in a high quartile last year, a publication in it may still be counted.
Requirements for publication content
The article must be relevant to the candidate's doctoral thesis or dissertation topic. Publication in journals with an interdisciplinary focus (Multidisciplinary, Interdisciplinary, General, Miscellaneous) is permitted.
The journal quartile is counted at the moment:
publication of the article,
or in the year preceding publication,
or at the time of dissertation defense.
If the journal's indexing in Scopus and/or Web of Science is discontinued, the applicant's publications for the year of indexing discontinuation and for the previous year are not taken into account.
Choosing a publishing strategy
How many publications can a doctoral student have and where can they be posted:
4 publications:
1 article in a Web of Science Core Collection journal (SCI, SSCI, AHSI) or Scopus journal with a percentile rank of at least 25–35%.
3 articles in KOKSON journals.
2 publications:
2 articles in Web of Science Core Collection or Scopus journals with a percentile of 35% or higher (one may be a review).
2 publications:
1 article in Q1–Q2 WoS Core Collection or Scopus with 35%+ percentile.
1 abstract in the proceedings of a scientific conference indexed in the Web of Science.
1 publication
1 article in the Web of Science Core Collection Q1 journal according to JCR.
