Many scientists working seriously in this field aspire to become associate professors. A scientist must complete several stages and meet all the requirements to achieve this relatively high scientific status.

It's worth noting that the term "associate professor" is used to define a rank and position. Holding such a title signifies a person's high status and prestige among scholars. In any case, it implies that the individual is engaged in a specific type of teaching and has already achieved the expertise of a researcher in a specific field of science. Therefore, let's consider the requirements for obtaining the title of associate professor.

Requirements for obtaining the title of associate professor

The order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine states that associate professor status can be obtained by employees working in higher education institutions, including postgraduate education institutions. This also applies to higher religious educational institutions that meet the following requirements:

  • Awarded the degree of Doctor of Science or Doctor of Philosophy;
  • The researcher has studied, completed internships, or worked at universities or other research institutions in OECD or EU countries, or has completed or managed projects funded by these countries. This can be confirmed by a diploma, certificate, or diploma. They can also participate in at least one seminar, conference, or symposium held in OECD or EU countries;
  • He/she is a teacher of an academic discipline in the state language or in the language of a country that is part of the OECD, and has high scientific and methodological knowledge, which has been confirmed by the conclusion of the department in which he/she works.

In addition to the above, another requirement for obtaining the title of associate professor is holding the position of assistant, lecturer, senior lecturer, head, or deputy head of a department for at least five years. In addition, the scholar must have spent the last calendar year working in the same department under an employment contract or agreement.

The minimum required for a future associate professor is the publication of scientific or scientific-methodological works and a defended dissertation.

How many and what kind of articles are needed to obtain the title of associate professor?

As stated earlier, a future associate professor must publish a certain number of scientific papers:

  • At least one scientific article must be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal in Scopus or WoS; these can be domestic or international professional publications.
  • It is essential to have a certificate (this requirement is set out in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) indicating proficiency in one of the EU languages at a level of at least B2. Alternatively, one must demonstrate proficiency in 10 scientific papers published in one of these languages.
