How many articles are required for the doctoral degree

People who are engaged in science often set the goal of obtaining a doctoral degree. Of course, through this, the researcher will be able to reach his or her full potential, and to realize his or her potential in the chosen field.

But, in fact, this way is complicated and thorny, so choosing science, the future doctor should understand that he will have to work a lot in this direction: write a certain number of scientific articles, write a doctoral dissertation, make presentations at scientific conferences to demonstrate his skills and abilities to apply his own developments in science. Therefore, to understand, it is necessary to know at once how many articles are needed for the defense, what criteria are imposed in different editions, where it is better to be published, etc.

How many articles do I need to defend my doctoral dissertation?

The current Procedure states that the degree of doctor of sciences is awarded in specialized scientific councils after the future researcher has been able to demonstrate his achievements expressed in the following:

• Doctoral Dissertation Defense;
• Publication of a monograph;
• Published at least 20 scientific articles, presented in national and international peer-reviewed journals. Their list is approved by the MES.

If the future doctoral candidate presents his or her scientific achievements in the form of a monograph or in the form of articles, he or she must submit a scientific report. The latter must summarize the results of all the research he or she has conducted, which are provided in such publications. It should be noted that the applicant for the degree of Doctor of Sciences must prepare the report independently, without involving co-authors.

Requirements for articles

As presented earlier, a future doctor needs to publish a minimum of 20 articles. Next, let's look at exactly what his or her research papers should be. These include the following publications:

1. Articles in scientific journals, which are included in the list of scientific professional publications of Ukraine;
2. Articles presented in scientific periodicals of other states that work in the same field as the future doctoral candidate and that correspond to the topic of his or her scientific research;
3. A minimum of 3 articles (from September 1, 2022 a minimum of 5 articles), the scientific applicant must submit in the scientific direction in which he/she prepared his/her scientific achievement. For this purpose, you can choose at least two different periodicals, which were included in the category "A" of the List of scientific professional publications of Ukraine, or in foreign publications, which are indexed in the databases Scopus or WoS;
4. No more than three patents for inventions that have been registered in countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and that directly relate to the scientific results presented in the doctoral dissertation;
5. No more than two monographs or two sections in collective monographs;
6. For dissertations from the field of pedagogical sciences, one manual must be provided.

Articles Category B for doctoral studies

A significant link in the educational chain is the doctoral studies. The requirements for the doctoral degree are high. The publication of scientific articles in high-level journals is mandatory in the educational and scientific program of this direction. This requirement is presented in the Procedure for Preparation of Candidates for Higher Education - Doctoral Studies.

Each scientific study that a doctoral student conducts must follow an individual plan. It is obligatory to strictly observe the following points:

• Timeline for writing;
• Quality work content;
• Strict volume;
• Research paper format.

Today, the functions of the Higher Attestation Commission are performed by the MES, and therefore the requirements for doctoral studies include the publication of professional articles in peer-reviewed journals of Category B. This category is one of the varieties of professional publications that exist in Ukraine. Such domestic platforms are scientific, and in the selection of content for printing they conduct a thorough check.

Scopus articles for doctoral dissertation

One of the most authoritative and large-scale is the scientometric database Scopus. More than 24,000 publications are reviewed here. Also an important indicator for the publication of an article here is the quality of the material. There are strict and stringent requirements for it, but after all, articles are also printed here for the defense of a doctoral dissertation.

As a result, the Ph.D. receives high-quality material, which will subsequently be a source of citations for scientists from different countries. For the defense of a doctoral dissertation, the publication of his/her scientific article in one of the scientific journals reviewed by Scopus will be a significant bonus. At the same time, the scientist thus increases his or her prestige; demonstrates his or her scientific position to the whole world on the problem under study; gets an opportunity to participate in the competition for grants.
