They waited. They had their work published. And not a single one of them received any notification that Scopus had delisted the journal in June 2026.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">This is exactly what a loss looks like in the academic world: not a scandal, not a warning\u2014just a publication that, one day, is no longer considered valid. At a dissertation defense. During a performance review. In a grant application.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">Over the course of two months\u2014May and June\u2014Scopus removed 37 journals from its database. Twelve of them were removed in June. Among them was a journal trusted by hundreds of Kazakhstani authors.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">We don't find out about this in advance. Scopus doesn't give any advance notice. Among the journals excluded in June is one that we examined in detail in Issue No. 9:<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><strong>Retos (Spain)<\/strong> \u2014 Analysis in Issue No. 9, \u00abCandidates for Removal from Scopus.\u00bb. <a href=\"https:\/\/a-articles.kz\/en\/journals-that-will-soon-lose-their-scopus-indexing-chapter-9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">View the analysis \u2192\u00a0<\/a><\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">A Spanish journal on physical education and sports sciences. At the time of our analysis, we identified the following characteristics of a high-risk publication:<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">\u2014 a sharp increase in the number of publications over a short period of time<br \/>\u2014 shorter review times<br \/>\u2014 active promotion through academic intermediaries<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">The June update to Scopus confirmed the forecast.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">According to Scopus, Kazakhstani authors have published in this journal <strong>more than 55 articles.<\/strong> Taking co-authorship into account, this is <strong>About 200 researchers from Kazakhstan whose publications are no longer indexed.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-47d6734 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"47d6734\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18239e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"18239e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">\ud83d\udcca 42 out of 48\u2014and that's no coincidence<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">Between 2024 and 2026, 42 of the 48 journals we had flagged in the \u00abCandidates for Removal from Scopus\u00bb section were officially removed from the database. It is yet another confirmation that the database is active, evolving, and does not send out warnings.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">Eight journals have been permanently discontinued in Scopus (Discontinuation). Four more have changed their editorial policies to such an extent that the database could no longer confirm their compliance with standards (Journal change policy). In total, this amounts to twelve journals from eight countries, whose authors were not notified.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><strong>What does this mean in practice:<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">\u2014 An article submitted to a journal before the author was removed from the journal\u2019s list may not be counted toward the evaluation;<br \/>\u2014 Publication in a disqualified journal is grounds for rejection during the dissertation defense;<br \/>\u2014 Grants and academic titles tied to publications in Scopus are also at risk.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">Our monitoring for 2024\u20132026 confirms that 42 of the 48 journals we identified as high-risk were officially delisted. In today\u2019s academic environment, the authors who survive are those who make decisions based on data, not on hope. Checking a journal before submission is not an unnecessary precaution\u2014it is the bare minimum.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About 200 researchers from Kazakhstan published articles in a journal that is no longer indexed in Scopus.
