On January 6, 2025, updated rules for awarding academic degrees came into effect in Kazakhstan. Now, public universities are required to check not only the originality of dissertations but also the presence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the text. Many scientists are concerned: what will happen if AI is discovered in their dissertations?

What happens if AI is discovered in an already defended dissertation?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

1. The work is removed from consideration.<\/h4>

The dissertation council stops considering it.
Your protection is automatic is postponed or cancelled<\/strong>, the work is returned for revision or rejected entirely.<\/p>

2. You are not allowed to defend yourself.<\/h4>

The commission records violation of academic ethics<\/strong>, because using AI without notification = forgery.
You lose the right to defend your thesis this academic year (and sometimes the next).<\/p>

3. It is possible that the degree may be refused.<\/h4>

If the fact of using AI is already revealed after defense<\/strong>, it is considered serious violation<\/strong>:<\/p>

The new rules are strictly written because:<\/strong><\/p>

\u26a0\ufe0f Neural networks are widely used for text generation;<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u26a0\ufe0f The state wants to eliminate "automatic" dissertations and preserve the scientific value of works.<\/p>

Universities are required to comply with these standards, and violators are simply rejected at the stage of admission to the defense.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When is AI allowed?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t

AI allowed to use<\/strong>, but only if observed three conditions<\/strong>:<\/p>

1. Pre-approval.<\/h4>

AI can be applied only after receiving written consent<\/strong>:<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\ud83d\udd3a Ethics Commission of the OVPO (organization of higher and postgraduate education).<\/p>

Without these two approvals, any use of AI is considered a violation.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u00a02. Where can AI be used?<\/h4>

AI is only allowed auxiliary<\/strong>, For example:<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\ud83d\udd3a for analyzing large amounts of data (Big Data);<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\ud83d\udd3a for building statistical models;<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\ud83d\udd3a to search for patterns;<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\ud83d\udd3a for processing questionnaires or social surveys;<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\ud83d\udd3a when working with open databases (Scopus, PubMed, etc.).<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Text generation, paragraph writing, and conclusion formulation are prohibited.<\/strong><\/p>

3. Mandatory reference to AI.<\/h4>

If AI was used, even minimally, it was necessary to:<\/p>

\ud83d\udd3a indicate this in the text of the dissertation (in the methodology, notes or appendices);<\/p>

\ud83d\udd3a describe, how exactly and at what stage it was applied<\/strong>;<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\ud83d\udd3a Provide a link to a specific tool (ChatGPT, Google Bard, etc.);<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\ud83d\udd3a explain, How was the reliability of the results checked?<\/strong>.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Registration is in accordance with the rules of your university.<\/p>

The author used GPT-4 to pre-classify questionnaires from 500 respondents. He then manually double-checked and verified the findings. The AI was approved by a consultant and is described in the Methodology section, with references provided.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
