Article
Category: Articles about Scopus
Date: 09.01.2026

Introduction

In 2026, the world of scientific publishing is undergoing transformations comparable only to the digital revolution of the past decade. The emergence of generative artificial intelligence, the intensification of global challenges—the climate crisis, the crisis of democratic institutions—and the rethinking of academic approaches are shaping a new reality in the field of research. In this new reality, it is not those who publish frequently who succeed, but those who stay ahead of the curve.

According to the Academy of Articles’ analysis, the research areas included in this review have the greatest potential to be highly cited in 2026. This is confirmed by data from Scopus, scientometric analysis, journal editorial plans, and signals from major international conferences.

This analytical article provides a systematic overview of the thematic areas that will be the focus of English-language scientific publications indexed in Scopus. We do not merely identify popular topics; rather, we highlight strategic growth areas that serve as a guide for editors, researchers, and grant providers around the world.

For convenience and a more in-depth analysis, all topics have been grouped by key scientific fields, with an emphasis on their relevance, citation rates, practical significance, and potential impact on policies, practices, and technologies. This is not a list of «buzzwords,» but a guide for those who do not want their research to get lost in the shadows of PDF archives.

Separately, as part of this review, we added a marker «Trending Topics for 2026». For those fields where the Academy’s Kazakhstani co-authorship catalog already includes collections of trending articles (education/pedagogy, technical sciences, including IT), we are adding links to the relevant sections and brief instructions on how to reserve a spot in a co-authored project.

TYPES OF SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES IN 2026

In 2026, the popularity of formats that offer maximum evidence and practical value—and that align well with the principles of open science—will remain steady or grow. The practice of open access significantly expands the audience of researchers who can access the work, thereby increasing the number of citations.

1) Systematic literature reviews

Systematic reviews, which synthesize the results of numerous studies using a standardized methodology, continue to gain popularity and credibility. In the medical and educational sciences, such reviews are considered the «gold standard» of secondary research and often receive very high citation counts. The editorial boards of Scopus and Web of Science journals expect reviews of increasingly high quality, with a broad range of sources and transparent methodology.

2) Meta-analyses

Meta-analyses—the quantitative synthesis of data from multiple studies—are typically published alongside systematic reviews or as a component of them. In the era of evidence-based science (especially in medicine), meta-analyses are highly regarded and frequently cited because they provide convincing answers to controversial questions and lead to new, generalized conclusions.

3) Applied Research

Articles that demonstrate the practical application of scientific findings or propose solutions to specific problems are increasingly coming to the forefront. Applied (translational) research in engineering, computer science, biomedicine, and other fields will be particularly prominent, as it addresses the needs of industry, medicine, and society. Journals place great emphasis on works that demonstrate the implementation of technologies in real-world settings, the development of prototypes, clinical applications, policy recommendations, and so on.

CONCLUSION

In 2026, the world of scientific publications will be shaped by interdisciplinarity, technological innovation, and a focus on real-world impact. The focus will be on topics that bring together AI, sustainable development, social transformation, and global challenges. Various fields of science are showing a growing interest in the practical value of research, inclusivity, digital equity, and the ethical use of technology.

Open access and formats that provide a high level of evidence—such as systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and applied research—will play a significant role. Publications that include comprehensive analysis, transparent methodology, and practical solutions will have the greatest chance of being cited and having an impact.

With this in mind, it is important for researchers to focus not only on «trendy» topics, but also on the format, quality, and integrity of their work—it is precisely this combination of relevance and scientific integrity that will shape the face of scientific progress in 2026.
