Journals Removed from Scopus in April–May 2026

    A new database update recorded 25 journals removed from Scopus in April–May 2026. Scopus made significant cuts in April and May 2026.

    Twenty-five journals—in two months. From different countries, on different topics, published by different publishers. From Elsevier to little-known regional publications, from technical engineering journals to mycological bulletins.

    This is neither an anomaly nor a «technical error.» It is a message that Scopus regularly sends to the scientific community: the database is not a guarantee. The status «indexed in Scopus» is not a lifetime license; it is a conditional approval that can be revoked without personal notification to the author.

    If your article is currently with one of these journals at any stage—from submission to acceptance for publication—please read this carefully.

    Magazines from our «Candidates for Removal» list that have been officially dropped

    The April–May update confirmed the risks facing four journals that the Article Academy had warned about in its «Candidates for Exclusion from Scopus» section—one of them as far back as two years ago.

    Environment and Social Psychology — analyzed in first issue of «Pretenders» as a journal with critical risks. The warning came two years ago—and has now been confirmed.

    ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts — was reviewed in Issue No. 14 as a publication exhibiting signs of inconsistent editorial practices.

    Scientific Culture — was analyzed in Issue No. 13 as a journal with a high probability of being deindexed.

    MSW Management — discussed in Issue No. 13 as a publication that had changed its editorial policy in a way that did not comply with Scopus standards.

    As we noted in previous updates, 41 of the 48 journals we highlighted in the «Contenders» section have been officially removed from Scopus.

    April and May only confirmed the trend: risky magazines are bound to fail sooner or later.

    📊 41 out of 48—and that’s no coincidence Between 2024 and 2026, 41 of the 48 journals we warned about in our «Candidates for Removal from Scopus» column were officially removed from the database. This is the highest rate among teams that monitor scientific publications.

    Journal Change Policy — Journals That Have Changed Their Editorial Policies

    These journals have not disappeared entirely, but they have changed their policies to such an extent that Scopus can no longer confirm their compliance with indexing standards. For authors, the practical risk is the same: a publication in such a journal may not be recognized—just as with journals on the list of those excluded from Scopus.

    Conclusions

    Twenty-five journals removed from Scopus in two months—this isn’t just a record for the sake of a record. It reflects how Scopus continues to purge its database of publications that no longer meet its standards or have simply ceased operations.

    Thirteen journals have been designated as “Discontinuation”—they no longer exist as active publications. Another twelve—designated as “Journal Change Policy”—have changed their editorial policies to such an extent that Scopus cannot confirm their compliance with its criteria.

    Among those excluded are publications from Elsevier, SAGE, Taylor & Francis, and World Scientific. These are not just «dubious, little-known journals.» Well-known publishers also do not receive discounts based on their reputation.

    What this means in practical terms for virtually every author:

    • An article submitted or accepted before the journal was removed from the list may not be counted toward certification;
    • Publication in a retracted journal may serve as grounds for rejection during the dissertation defense;
    • Grants and honors tied to Scopus publications are also at risk.

    The April–May update is yet another confirmation of a simple but uncomfortable truth: reviewing a journal before submission is neither paranoia nor excessive caution. It is basic professional practice for a modern scholar.

    Those who make decisions based on up-to-date data, rather than on trust in «well-known» names, are incomparably better protected.

    Don't risk missing your defense deadline because of the wrong choice of journal

    Before submitting your article, check the journal in Scopus and its current percentile. If your publication requires an impact factor, 35+ or 50+, compare it with the requirements for the relevant subject category and grade level. Pay special attention to any signs that a student might be at risk of being excluded.

    Enter the journal title or ISSN into the free «Academy of Articles» service to get data on the percentile, quartile, and CiteScore.
